RPL Skill Assessment

RPL skill assessment is the process of evaluating your existing skills and experience to determine if they meet the competency standards of a nationally recognised qualification. If you’ve gained skills through work, life experience, or informal training, an RPL skill assessment can formally recognise what you already know.

At Skill Elevate, our RPL skill assessment process follows the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) guidelines to ensure fairness, accuracy, and compliance with national standards. We work with partner Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to assess your skills and issue qualifications that are recognised across Australia.

What Is an RPL Skill Assessment?

A Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) skill assessment is a structured process that assesses your existing knowledge, skills, and experience against the units of competency in a qualification. Instead of sitting in a classroom or completing assignments, you provide evidence that shows you already have the required skills.

RPL skill assessments are suitable for people who have:

  • Extensive work experience in a specific industry
  • Completed informal training, short courses, or in-house programs
  • Developed skills through volunteering or life experience

If your skills meet the required standards, you can achieve a full or partial qualification through this process.

The RPL Skill Assessment Process

Step 1: Free Eligibility Check

We begin with a free consultation to assess your suitability for RPL. We review your work history, job roles, and qualifications to determine if you’re eligible to proceed with an RPL skill assessment.

Step 2: Evidence Collection

You’ll be asked to submit evidence that demonstrates your skills and experience. This could include:

  • Résumés and job descriptions
  • Employer references or third-party reports
  • Samples of your work, such as reports, designs, or projects
  • Photos or videos of you performing tasks
  • Certificates from previous training (formal or informal)

We provide guidance on what evidence is required and how to organise it.

Step 3: Competency Conversation and Practical Demonstration

After reviewing your evidence, a qualified assessor may conduct a competency conversation with you. This is a structured interview where you discuss your experience and demonstrate your understanding of key concepts. For some qualifications, you may also need to demonstrate specific tasks through practical assessments, either in person or via video.

Step 4: Gap Training (If Needed)

If there are areas where your skills don’t fully meet competency requirements, gap training can be arranged. This ensures you only complete the training necessary to cover the identified gaps, making the process faster and more efficient.

Step 5: Issuing the Qualification

Once your assessor is satisfied you’ve demonstrated competence in all units, you’ll receive a nationally recognised qualification issued by one of our partner RTOs.

How Does the RPL Certification Process Work?

At Skill Elevate, we simplify the RPL Certification process. Here’s how it typically works:

  1. Free consultation
We review your work history and experience to confirm your eligibility for RPL Certification.
  2. Evidence collection
You provide evidence of your skills and knowledge. This can include:
    • Work samples and projects
    • References or letters from employers or clients
    • Resumes and job descriptions
    • Licenses and tickets
    • Photos or videos of you performing work tasks
    • Records of training, workshops, or courses
  3. Assessment by a qualified assessor
A registered assessor from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) reviews your evidence. If your experience meets the competency requirements, you’ll be deemed competent.
  4. Receive your RPL Certification
Once you are assessed as competent, you’ll be issued a nationally recognised qualification or statement of attainment.
