RPL Assessment Process

Turn your skills and experience into a nationally recognised qualification.

The Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment process is a structured way to formally acknowledge your existing skills and experience. It allows you to gain a nationally recognised qualification without the need for full-time study or repeating what you already know.

At Skill Elevate, we make the RPL assessment process simple, efficient, and supportive. Below is a step-by-step guide to help you understand what’s involved and how to get started.

Step 1: Free Eligibility Check

The first step of the RPL Assessment Process is a free eligibility check with one of our consultants. We review your work history, roles, skills, and past training to see if they match the requirements of a formal qualification. It’s not about how long you’ve worked but whether your skills are current, relevant, and meet industry standards. This initial review ensures you have the right experience before moving forward in the RPL process.

Our role is to assess whether your experience is current, relevant, and sufficient to demonstrate competency. This ensures you’re a good fit before moving on to the next stage.

What We Consider:

  • Relevance of your skills to the qualification.
  • Currency of your experience—how recent it is.
  • Depth and breadth of your knowledge and skills.
  • Evidence that supports your claims of competency.

We’ll also explain:

  • What evidence you’ll need to provide.
  • How the assessment process works.
  • Any potential gaps you might need to address.

This step ensures you’re on the right track before you commit time to gathering documents or undergoing an assessment.

Step 2: Evidence Gathering

Once we confirm your eligibility, you’ll need to provide evidence of your skills and experience. This is a crucial part of the assessment. The evidence you provide shows the assessor that you have the required competency for the qualification.

Types of evidence may include:

  • Work experience (paid or voluntary)
  • Reference letters from current or previous employers
  • Work samples, reports, or projects you’ve completed
  • Photos or videos of you performing tasks
  • Training certificates from short courses or in-house programs
  • Résumé and job descriptions
  • Third-party reports

If you need help gathering this documentation, our team is here to support you. We can guide you on what’s required and how to present it.

Step 3: Evidence Review and Competency Conversation

Once your evidence is collected, it’s reviewed by a qualified assessor. The assessor evaluates whether your experience meets the competency standards of the qualification you’re applying for. In most cases, there’s also a competency conversation. This is a one-on-one discussion with the assessor, where you talk about your work history and demonstrate your knowledge.

Some qualifications may also require practical demonstrations, particularly in trades and technical areas. These can be done through video recordings or live demonstrations, depending on the qualification and industry requirements.

Step 4: Gap Training (If Required)

If there are gaps in your skills or experience that prevent you from meeting all competency requirements, we offer gap training. This is targeted, practical training that covers only the areas you need to complete your qualification. You won’t have to repeat things you already know—gap training is designed to be efficient and focused.

Step 5: Qualification Issued

The final step of the RPL Assessment Process is awarding your qualification. Once you’ve been assessed as competent in all required units, you’ll receive a nationally recognised qualification through one of our partner Registered Training Organisations (RTOs). This qualification holds the same value as one earned through formal study and is recognised across Australia. Completing the RPL Assessment Process gives you formal recognition for your skills and experience, helping you meet industry standards and advance your career.

You’ll receive your certificate and transcript, which can help you meet licensing requirements, apply for new roles, or pursue further study. The qualification confirms your skills and knowledge meet industry and national standards.
